Best New Restaurants 2009

by Denniz Ray Wheaton

"What with its minimalist look and exotically spiced cocktails, Veerasway flts in perfectly on Randolph Street, a.k.a. Chicago's dining weathervane. Angela Lee scored with Sushi Wabi next door and De Cero down the block. Now she's got Steven Hubbie, her new executive chef, doing terdflc street snacks like fried slivered okra tangled around hotsour chat masala spices, and organic green papaya and mango salad invigorated with tamarind-lime dressing and methi (fenugreek) chutney. Veerasway's delicious excursions into Indo-American territory-chili-rubbed and tandoor- braised vindaloo pork ribsare so spicy you'll keep the soothing charred pineapple topping close by, '. all while looking forward to the next flery bite."

Hip take on Indian fare, Randolph Street style

by Phil Vettel

"Angela Hepler-Lee has a habit of turning the exotic into the approachable. With Susan Thompson, she opened Sushi Wabi, featuring a Sushi 101 menu and urban-chic decor, along the Randolph Street restaurant corridor in 1999. Five years later, the duo unveiled De Cero, a simple but not simplistic, casual-hip Mexican concept, a few doors east of their first concept. And now there is Veerasway, a modern Indian restaurant that sits next door to Sushi Wabi. Which makes Hepler-Lee, arguably, the Queen of Randolph Street..." < read full article >

EDITORIAL REVIEW

by Jennifer Olvera

"Folks behind Sushi Wabi and de Cero expand their scope at this sleek, minimalist spot with yellow-green and slatted wood walls and views into the tandoor oven. Blond wood seating encourages getting cozy with neighbors, while lantern-like fixtures cast an inviting glow. Although traditional dishes like chicken tikka masala and lamb rogan josh can be found on the menu, plenty of others are tweaked. There's also a section honoring Indian street foods where samosas and chicken drumsticks get play. Among the more unique creations is grilled salmon swimming in turmeric-infused cucumber broth. Likewise, drinks like the rummy coconut lassi martini surprise."

BOLLYWOOD BITE

Fresh Indian fare sets a subtle scene on Randolph Street

"...To many restaurateurs, West Randolph Street is a source of inspiration. Maybe it’s the old-school butcher shops or the 100-year-old buildings, but there’s something about the gritty street that often prompts—hmm, how do we say it nicely?—over-the-top design. Th ankfully, restaurateur Angela Hepler-Lee (De Cero, Sushi Wabi) decided to go in the opposite direction with her latest endeavor, Veerasway. Understated, minimalist and simply sophisticated, the subtle interior allows the creative food its chance to shine....." < read full article >

NEWS YOU CAN MUNCH ON...

Here’s our take on the hottest culinary happenings in Chicago this month

"...For menu inspiration, Lee traveled to London where she became enamored with the European-style Indian food of a chef named Veera and decided to do something similar (“Veera’s way”: Get it?). Labeling the food as “fresh Indian,” Lee describes it as a blending of Indian spices and cooking methods with American food sensibilities. On the compact but varied menu (“I like my restaurants to be really simple and user friendly,” says Lee) diners can opt for traditional dishes—think chicken tikka masala and garlic-mashed-potato naan—or more modern ones, such as cumin rib-eye steak kabob and crispy chicken drumsticks with a dill raita..." < read full article >

Two new Indian spots in Chicago

by Steve Dolinsky

"Up until recently, if you wanted to sample a taste of India, you had to travel up to Devon Avenue in Rogers Park.

But two new restaurants in different neighborhoods are exposing this exotic cuisine to a wider audience.

Finally, the complexity and nuance of Indian food hits the masses. Far from Devon Avenue, on a busy stretch of West Randolph, the brand new Veerasway beckons with modern decor, spice-laden cocktails and fresh ingredients..." < read full article >

Veerasway riffs on Indian cuisine

by Alison Neumer Lara

"Small plates for sharing are nothing new to Indian cuisine. What's different at Veerasway is a fresh, modern approach that offers space, all on one menu, for street snacks, traditional dishes and contemporary cooking in a stylish, accessible, Indian-inspired setting."

"At Veerasway, the concept works even better because most diners are generally less familiar with Indian cooking. Don't compare it to eateries on Devon Avenue. In this form — not too spicy and with just enough of a twist — Veerasway's Indian becomes an exciting and hip business lunch excursion that still appeals to the less adventurous. It helps that service is swift and competent, while a light midday crowd keeps noise levels comfortable for conversation..."

A Randolph vet takes Indian beyond Devon

by Heather Shouse

"... There’s an understated, tasteful design, with dark wood slats woven together to cover an entire wall and simple. In other words, it’s a well-thought-out midscale dining destination—it just so happens to serve Indian food.

And it’s about time. Chinese and Mexican have long coexisted in Chicago as both a cheap, quick fix and a complex cuisine capable of carrying restaurants where dinner for two with drinks runs $70. It’s only in the past couple of years—with Vermilion, Marigold and now Veerasway—that Indian has graduated from BYOBs with plastic tablecloths to a nice night out.... "

Veering Towards the Masala

Members of the sushi wabi/de Cero team extend their global reach to the subcontinent with Veerasway, a modern Market District take on Indian cuisine combining an affordable menu of classics, street food and original dishes with a suitably exotic, fabulously named lineup of libations; the space exudes upscale-funky elegance via unexpected shapes and textures, a communal table and a glass-enclosed tandoor oven.

Don't miss out on this treasure! It's a wonderful place, and has terrific ambience, great food, and warm, personal service. I have been waiting for an Indian restaurant to open in our neighborhood, and this one has exceeded my expectations - I have spent time in India, and eat Indian food at least 4 times a week - one complaint is that I always feel overfull, as it's not the lightest cuisine in the world. Veerasway changed that - it really is Fresh Indian, just like it says on the sign - light, delicious, and not over-spicy. Couldn't be better - so glad they are here in Fulton Mkt! It doesn't claim to be traditional - there are plenty of places for that - this is just what I have waited for...

Angela Lee, a partner in Sushi Wabi and De Cero, is behind this new “fresh Indian” small-plates focused Warehouse District spot.

Lee tells us the fresh applies not only to the cuisine, but also the restaurant design. She’s creating a menu that includes “Indo-American creations” – essentially more familiar American ingredients and cooking techniques and with Indian injections (think grilled cumin-rubbed rib-eye kebab with tropical relish and poached scallops in seasoned coconut milk with crispy curry leaves). Although Lee is including some classics on the menu, don’t come expecting the full array of Devon Avenue staples. Her “from the street” section lists street-food faves such as a Jaipur market vegetable samosa, a pastry turnover stuffed with potatoes, peas, and spices with green chile chutney, and the “in tradition” section includes lamb rogan josh (braised lamb shank served with a onion-cashew gravy) with cumin basmati rice.

The interior, which was designed by Amelia Briske (she also did Sushi Wabi and De Cero), features more modern colors and style than the average mom-and-pop Indian eatery, and there are views of a glass-enclosed tandoor oven so you can watch the chefs in action. FYI: the name honors a London-based chef named Veera who was an inspiration to Lee, and his fresh style of cooking (get it now?).

Thrillist Chicago 04/29/2008

A yellow-bricked spot walled with hand-woven latticework, Veer's menu ranges from American dishes w/ exotic spices to ultra-traditional Subcontinent fare, a "Fresh Indian" approach conceived after the owner's spontaneous ten-day South Asian excursion -- so what happened in Rajasthan, didn't stay in Rajasthan. Kick things off with “Indo-American” dishes like lamb meatballs (w/ apricot, almond & cardamom sauce), coconut scallops, and hot-chili-and-yogurt chicken drumsticks dubbed “Hot Bollywood Lollipops” -- served with a side of heavily choreographed street dancing, but no kissing. Authentic Indian grub includes lemon tandor chicken and braised lamb shank in onion & cashew gravy, plus street-food staples like banana peppers stuffed w/ lentils & Indian cheese, deep fried in chickpea batter (like doctors and migratory birds, deep fryers respect no borders). < read full article >

Spice Girl

Veerasway Restaurant Opens

If celebrity culture is your sustenance (no judgments), then the New Kids on the Block reunion should sate you through summer. If you thrive on actual food, there’s another new kid on the block you should look out for: Veerasway. Opening today, the latest addition to the West Loop’s restaurant row gives traditional Indian cuisine a sleek, contemporary makeover.

Owner Angela Hepler Lee knows a thing or two about ethnic grub — she made sushi sexy at Wabi and tacos trendy at De Cero. For this venture, Lee adds unusual twists to usual Indian fare. Think scallops with coconut milk, curry leaves, and red chilis; crispy banana peppers stuffed with lentils and paneer; and creamy coconut rum lassi martinis. Don’t leave without trying the spiced chocolate cake with rice ice cream and cashew praline. You got it: It’s the right stuff.
